Walk-a-Thon Totals: 2012

Good evening folks!

I just wanted to send a quick update saying that Mr. Moccia and I counted all the money you raised at the Walk-a-Thon.  The grand total was just about…….

I would say that means that the fundraiser was a great success!

Thanks to everyone for walking and running!!!

Walk-a-Thon 2012

On Friday, November 9, 2012 the fifth graders participated in the Third-Annual McKinley Walk-a-Thon to raise money for our end of the year activities.  The weather was perfect (just like last year’s!) and the students and staff were more than ready to tackle the hour-long walk!

While students count their laps and tally their money amounts, I made a special video to commemorate the day!

Students:  What was your favorite part of the Walk-a-Thon???

Factors and Multiples Game: Play it!

(SOURCE: http://nrich.maths.org/5468)

Why play this game?

Play this game to practice finding factors and multiples of numbers less than 100. In order to play strategically, try to think of numbers in terms of their factors, utilising primes and square numbers to develop winning moves.

  • This is a game for two players.
  • The first player chooses a positive even number that is less than 50, and crosses it out on the grid.
  • The second player chooses a number to cross out. The number must be a factor or multiple of the first number.
  • Players continue to take it in turns to cross out numbers, at each stage choosing a number that is a factor or multiple of the number just crossed out by the other player.
  • The first person who is unable to cross out a number loses.

Reflection Questions

Do you have any winning strategies?  Explain.

Are there any numbers you shouldn’t go to?  What are they and why?

Test Prep: Divisibility Rules

Want to see if you are ready for those divisibility rules?

FIRST: Check out this game (it is timed!) for a review of the rules and some extra practice with factors. Have fun, but remember: factors are NOT on the test Thursday!

THEN: Try this one out.  It is a pretty fun way to study!

And don’t forget the division!

Test prep rules!

Do you think you are ready for the test? How have you been preparing for the test at home?

Monthly Celebration: October

Expect Respect, our school wide behavior program, is proactive incentive system for students in grades K through 5.  Students who “do the right thing” get rewarded weekly and monthly with fun activities.  In addition to the celebrations, Mr. Moccia recognizes a different student each morning who was Caught Being Good by a staff member.  These students are recognized in the morning announcements and receive a green bracelet to wear.  It is a great program designed to reward students for all the good things they do, as opposed to the “bad” things they may do.  We believe that all kids are good kids!

Here are the basics in grade 5:

  • Expect Respect is a color based system where students are either green, yellow, or red at the end of the week.
  • Students receive 100 points at the beginning of each week and it is their responsibility to keep as many of these points as possible.
  • We keep track of the points in the spelling column of their agenda books so that parents and guardians can check nightly to see their child’s progress throughout the week.
  • For each Level 1 infraction (missing homework, not being on task/following directions, talking too much, etc) students will have 5 points deducted.
  • On Friday, students with 100-85 points are green, 80-75 are yellow, and below 75 are red for the week.  Students with a yellow or red week receive a yellow slip to be signed by parent.
  • Students on green at the end of the week participate in Green Recess on Friday afternoons.
  • Students who are green for at least 3 weeks for the month participate in the Monthly Celebration.  Parents will be notified if their child will not participate.
The October Monthly Celebration is a good one in grade 5: we paint pumpkins!  Each student who participated got a pumpkin and a brush and got right to work.  We had many creative faces, colors, and designs this year!

Was this a fun October Celebration?  Was it your first time painting a pumpkin?  WHat do you think would make for a fun Monthly Celebration in the future?

Don’t forget:

  • Tomorrow is CRAZY HAT DAY!!  Bring in a canned good and wear a crazy hat!
  • Walk a Thon $$ was due last Friday.  Please bring it in ASAP if you have not done so already!
  • Homework quiz 9 is due on Friday 11/4
  • You have until tomorrow to complete the Solar System Scavenger Hunt from Friday’s Post
  • Commenter Cards for the Quality Comment Post will be out in for the prize tomorrow!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
