Once a week students at the McKinley recieve 40 minutes of targeted and tiered math instruction. In grade 5 data that is collected through classwork, weekly homework quizzes, and various assesments allows me to put children into one of the three tiers of instruction and plan lessons to meet their needs. The goal of the AIM block is to provide appropriate levels of support and challenge for your individual child.
Much planning time is dedicated to developing these groups and lessons and students who have taken these blocks seriously have gained confidence and content knowledge that carries into our regular math periods.
In an effort to hold students more accountable for participation and effort during these times, students will begin assessing their progress in these areas weekly. The rubric they will use is as follows: Math AIM Rubric
These weekly progress assessments will be counted as 5% of their third trimester grade.
Finally, beginning Monday, January 7th I will be available from 3:45-4:15 to discuss any questions regarding your child’s progress in math. This Parent Check In Period will continue every Mondday for the month of January and February. No appointment is necessary, just go to the main office and let them know you are in to see me.
Yesterday afternoon a group of 20 students stayed to particpate in my first session EVER of peer tutoring. The idea came to me when I realized that many students can explain math concepts to peers better than I can so I did a little reading about it and-Bam! Peer tutoring was born!
I matched pairs of students from across the homerooms to help each other practice math, revise homework quizzes, and build math friendships (awww, sweet right?!)
The agenda for the sessions will change, but today we reviewed questions students got wrong on the ANET test we took in October. Since students have been reviewing these skills weekly there were great math conversations going on!

We have three weeks of sessions planned so far to test out the program. I will be looking for feedback from tutors and parents. Hopefully I will be able to expand the program soon!

This is an exciting opportunity for McKinley families!!
Mrs. Morris, McKinley’s Math Coach, and Mrs. Cecere, McKinley’s Reading Coach have teamed up to provide parents with homework support in ELA and Math!
- The workshops will take place on Mondays from 2:45-3:30 in the Successmaker Lab.
- Parents will be provided with homework support. For example, in learning new strategies students are using in ELA or Math class.
- Parents will be exposed to the rigor found in the new Common Core Standards and state testing.
Some suggested topics you could come work on with Msrs. Morris for math are:
- Using multiplication menus to divide
- Using the area model to multiply
- Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals
- Applying fifth grade math concepts into “real life” situations
